so i'm taking this upper division sociology class about race and ethnicity. the best part so far is hands down the insanely ignorant comments made by my fellow soc majors - for example, upon reading the statistic that the life expectancy for black americans is almost 7 years less than that of whites one man in the back of the class asked, very innocently, what accounted for this difference in life expectancy. (good question, sir, glad you asked) the answers provided by my classmates? drug use and gang activity.
i mean.....seriously?
also, most of the white people in the class did not realize they have a race. as in, they had to be told, 'white is a race.'
also, when asked about racism, most answers involved the south and slavery. um hi, racism does exist outside of the south and p.s. slavery was abolished in 1863. and thank you to the man who pointed out that hitler was not a racist but a nationalist, as if that somehow forgives the holocaust....from now on let's refer to it as 'ethnic clensing' rather than 'genocide' mmmmk?

Joe is taking a couple of race classes too, but they're in the political science department. He's reported the same things you have... isn't is surprising how little people really know?
it really is.
p.s. we never got to have our lj girls drinky night....were you in on that? either way, it should happen, and soon!
